Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques in Terrain and Aquifer Characterisations for Groundwater Potential
Abstract:
Groundwater represents one of the most important water sources in India and accounts for over 400 km3 of the annual utilizable resource in the country. Due to the highly variable nature of the climate, groundwater has become a popular alternative for irrigation and domestic water use across India. According to the World Bank 1999 groundwater accounts for over 80% of the rural domestic water supply and 39% of the irrigation water supply in India. On the basis of current estimations, only 30% of the total potential groundwater reserves are being exploited. India is expected to have another 400 million people by 2025. Industry and households will demand a larger share of fresh water from agriculture, which now consumes 85% of it. According to the World Bank, demand for industrial, energy production and other uses will rise from 67 billion m3 to 228 billion m3 by 2025. There has been an unprecedented wave of population growth in the state of during the last two decades. The population density of the state reflects the variation in population growth. The district-wise density between 1981-2011 the entire district recorded an increase in population density. The Srinagar and Jammu districts have the highest population density followed by the other districts. The density of Jammu district gone up from 513 person km2 as per 2001 census to 596 person km2 in 2011 census. Furthermore, 2.59 % of the average decadal growth rate population in rural area. Recently, a number of different types of industries have come up at different locations in 15 Jammu district. Due to population increase and industrialization, it has been reported that there is a decline in water table in this area. Considering the usefulness of Remote Sensing and GIS techniques in groundwater studies and availability of satellite and ancillary data, the present problem of evaluating the groundwater potential has been undertaken in the Jammu district of JK State.
