Title of the paper :
Ageism in Carol Shields The Stone Diaries
Abstract:
This joural examines how ageing is represented in Carol Shields’ The Stone Diaries. The research makes an effort to analyse ageing through the lens of gender, as ageing is unquestionably worse for women than it is for males, in an effort to expose societys ageist attitudes towards its old. According to the research, an elderly person is just seen as an old body that is genderless and is therefore assumed to be devoid of any sexual urges. The study also examines how Daisy, the aged protagonist, loses herself behind her narrative because the novel centres on a narrative within the novel’s narrative. Her hyper-visible ageing body keeps her self in continual submersion. Since her selfhood and individuality are either destroyed or neglected, the world only notices her drooping skin and wrinkles from her side. The plot of the book follows Daisy through her turbulent life, but this essay makes an effort to experience it with her. Hence, while Daisy writes her autobiography, Her life is what makes up her story, which gradually starts to focus on her to the point that she becomes She eventually passes away in a Florida nursing facility after becoming utterly engrossed in her story. Her passing The storys highest point of ageism is when she brings relief to her family. She operated as Association mother, grandmother, aunt, wife, and widow who passed away as an elderly woman Nothing further.
