Volume III Issue I January-March 2023
Name of Author :

Title of the paper :
Women as Sufferers and Preservers of Culture in Anita Desais Fasting, Feasting
Abstract:
In India, a country where women have also held leadership positions, the practice of suppressing women and their power is alarmingly widespread. While many reformers clamoured for womens independence and empowerment, many women themselves tacitly accepted it as tradition and culture, either intentionally or unconsciously. Years have passed, but the conflict and traps remain. There are still situations where a woman is seen as an obstacle to the development of another woman, citing culture and custom as the cause. Anita Desais novel Fasting, Feasting has been analysed as a depiction and shout out to all persecuted women who quietly preserve traditions, especially in the Indian setting of the first part of the book.
