The Intersection of Racism and Sexism in Toni Morrisons Sula
Abstract:
This study analyzes womens friendships in Sula and also focuses on the influence of race, class and gender in womens relationships. The novel highlights how women face challenges to patriarchal institutions and other attempts at subjugation through polygamy, the limitations of tradition, caste prejudices and political instability. Thus, the main goal of this study is to show how black women are treated unfairly and suffer from male supremacy within so is their community. Study shows the healing powers of female bonding, enabling women to overcome prejudice and survive to enjoy female empowerment, self-confidence establishing and expanding womens friendship into womens solidarity that participates in the nation building. However, another conclusion focuses on patriarchy as a threat the female bond and usually causes the alienation of women.
