Title of the paper :
Myth, History and Memory in Chitra Banerjees The Palace of Illusions
Abstract:
Award-winning poet and novelist Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni published The Palace of Illusions in 2008. The Palace of Illusions transports us to a period of history, myth, and pure mysticism that is relevant to todays war-torn globe. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni , a bestselling author, gives voice to a bold and sensual retelling of mesmerising stories from the Mahabharata that reveals the History and Memory. The story ends with the stormy life of Panchaali, daughter of King Drupad and wife to five husbands who seek to reclaim their birthright. Panchaalis destiny is a thread as golden and delicate as the lotus she finds woven into the fabric of legendary tales from the ancient Indian epic.Panchaali adds a feminine sensibility to her world of men, which is dominated by men, as well as the danger of attraction to ambiguous men. Panchaali bears witness to her fate with perceptive observations and a strong heart, from the tale of her magical birth in fire to her final moments as she puts an end to the Third Age of Man. In this riveting narrative of the interactions between soldiers, gods , and the enigmatic rules of destiny, Divakaruni imparts lessons for the war-torn world of today.
