Volume III Issue II April-June 2023
Name of Author :
A Malathi
Title of the paper :
Chitrangada is portrayed as a contemporary woman in Tagores Chitra
Abstract:
The freedom of women was strongly supported by Tagore. As a result, he treats his female characters quite liberally. A clear example of this sort is Chitrangada, the lead character in the one-act drama Chitra. She embodies the modern lady who disregards all social norms and lives a life which is both free and audacious. She outperforms the storys protagonist Arjuna in every way. She makes a wedding proposal to him. Unlike a typical lady, she does not just cry within four walls when he declines her proposal. Instead, she does great penance in order to appease the two Gods, Madana and Vasantha, and by doing so, she gains Arjunas affection. She outperforms Arjuna, the legendary fighter demonstrating her superiority.
