A Cultural Feminist Viewpoint on Dehumanization and Discrimination in Indian Arranged Marriage
Abstract:
Feminism is one of the literary movements for Supporting women in getting their Social rights and Equality. Feminism has different types they are, Eco-Feminism, Marxist Feminism, Dalit Feminism, Radical Feminism, Liberal Feminism, Lesbian Feminism, Cultural Feminism, Socialist Feminism, and more. This paper mainly focuses on Discrimination and Dehumanization in Indian Marriage by applying a Cultural Feminist Perspective. Feminism talks about female problems, gaining their rights from society, and raising voices against womens suppression and domination by patriarchy. The term cultural feminism emerged in the early 1970s among the womens liberation movement to support a range of political aims, critical platforms, and approaches. Cultural Feminism talks about female problems and discrimination done in the name of cultural norms. Here not only male domination takes place but also some women make other women making suffer on force to follow some cultural activities. This paper is not against Indian cultural norms but it is clearly against such demanding and arrangements done in India in the name of Indian culture. In India, Marriage is not difficult but the arrangement of marriage makes it more complicated. Especially arranging a marriage in search of the groom makes the bride and their family face a huge problem both physically and mentally. Here in Indian arrange marriage every problem is executed in the name of cultural norms which affect women. Dehumanization and Discrimination take place on seeing, a Matchmaking process like a horoscope chart, only the grooms family can visit the brides house, the grooms choice has priority over the bride, demanding jewels and money according to their sons status and more.
