Title of the paper :
Cognitive dissonance and distorted temporality: Representation of chattery mind in Kazuo Ishiguros The Unconsoled
Abstract:
The quasi character type of Ryder permeates Kazuo Ishiguros narrative, confronting us with situations where action is underrated repeatedly. The article demonstrates how, despite encountering circumstances that call for action, Ishiguros protagonist, Ryder chooses risk-averse and robotic actions that are opposed to change. It examines the connection between cognitive dissonance and distorted temporality in The Unconsoled using theories of unreliability, narrative processing, and dream interpretation. I contend that the narrators self- deception is represented by these dream laws, making his story dubious while a different, satirical account develops in its place. Together, these ideas reveal how unreliability could act outside of traditional realism and how dreams can be used as literary techniques inside one of the most enduring narratological frameworks. Although being seen as being incompatible with unreliability, non-realist goals played a significant part in creating unreliable narrative. The notion that the brave Ryder might have wasted his life initially seems contradictory. He is a renowned concert pianist, skilled artist, and well-liked societal figure. Nonetheless, there is still a compelling case to be made that his life has been in vain, particularly in the chattery mind.
