Abstract:
Indias caste system is the worlds longest surviving social hierarchy. A defining feature of Hinduism, caste encompass a complex ordering of social groups on the basis of ritual purity. A person is considered a member of the caste into which he or she is born and remains within that caste until death, although the particular ranking of the caste is very among regions. Ambedkar writes, Caste is not a division of labour, it is a division of laboures. The word Dalit is derived from Sanskrit language. Etymologically it means ground suppresed, Crushed, or broken to pieces. Mahatma Jyotira Govindrao phule, was an Indian social activist, thinker, anti-caste social reformer and writer from Maharashtra. He was the first one to use this term ‘Dalit’ in the context of exploitation of the people who were conventionally called shudra and outcaste Hindus.
