Title of the paper :
Prospects and Problems of Tourism in Himachal Pradesh
Abstract:
Tourism has emerged as a global phenomenon after the Second World War. The availability of better and faster means of communications has resulted into massive movement of people throughout the world, drawing them closer through experiencing and appreciating different culture and life styles. Thus tourism has always been a great unifying force responsible for interaction and mutual understanding among people with diverse backgrounds. Tourism acts as an engine for development through foreign exchange earnings and creation of direct and indirect employment. Himachal Pradesh is abundantly bestowed with natural beauty, ranging from vast tracts of high altitude Trans-Himalayas desert to dense green deodar forests, from apple orchards to cultivated terraces from snow-capped high Himalayan mountain ranges to snow fed lakes and gushing rivers. This makes the state a truly wonderful getaway. There are many bonafide reasons to visit the state. Inhabited by a populace that firmly believes in „Atithi Devo Bhava‟ the Guest is a God, the state offers a memorable travel and stay complemented by food that nourishes the body, music that transports the soul into the sublime and grand vistas, straight out of a dream world. Present study is undertaken to understand the prospects and problems of tourism in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Study is completed using secondary data and it was found that Himachal Pradesh offers a rare conglomerate of eco-tourism, pilgrimage, adventure, culture, heritage, leisure and wilderness. All types of tourism activities are available in the state. Apart from this there is lack of trained tourist guides, poor marketing of the state tourism abroad and very little budget for tourism related activities which creates hurdle in growth of tourism.
