Woman’s Image in Charlotte Perkins Gillman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper’’
Abstract:
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an American humanist, novelist, writer of short stories ,poetry and nonfiction .she wrote a short story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’. The Yellow Wallpaper published in 1892 in The new England Magazine.The story illustrates the attitude of society toward women’s mental and physical health.through the story , Gilman brings out the emotional and psychological feelings of rejection from society as a free thinking women .it is a reaction to the lack of free agency that women had in late 1800s and their inability to have a career and a family together.The story is written in the first person ,as a collection of jounal entries by a woman undergoing treatmnent in the form of rest cure . the story depicts the effect of understimulation on the narrator’s mental health and her descent into phychosis. The story is a symbol of the oppression of women in paternalistic society.
