Ancient Indian Mythological Folktales: A Blend of Faith and Tradition
Abstract:
“Every human society possesses a mythology which is inherited, transmitted and diversified by literature.” Northrop Frye The present study aims at analysis of ancient Indian Mythological Folktales of Bengal. It decodes the blend of faith and superstitions in the folktales of Sitala Mata The Deity of Small-pox as a symbolism. Folktales are a set of fictional tales about humans or animals wherein mythical beliefs are a big part of it. The intention behind the study is to preserve the tradition of intangible cultural heritage in the form of stories which have been handed down orally from one generation to another from centuries. Emphasis is laid on examining the traditional rituals performed in Eastern India especially a predominant part of Bengal and preserving these myths and folktales from dying out. These folktales describe how people cope with the activities of regular existence. Through the study of tales people can learn their rituals, culture, customs and social activities. The emphasis will be on analyzing and understanding our humanities.
