Romesh Gunesekera’s The Sandglass: An Inkling of Nationhood and Belongingness
Abstract:
Diasporic writing mainly deals with the mixture of assimilation, marginalization, rootlessness and identity crisis. Romesh Gunesekera, a Srilankan born British novelist is one of the internationally acclaimed writers of the present era. The thread of diasporic element can be seen in all his novels. The present paper “Romesh Gunesekera’s The Sandglass An Inkling of Nationhood and Belongingness” is an attempt to study about the harrowing experience of the displaced immigrants, living in the adopted homeland, England. The novel weaves altogether the fine threads of memory, exile and postcolonial upheaval. It also attempts to investigate the characters straddle between two homes, two cultures and two identities, creating an expatriate identity that lacks roots because of their living in two worlds.
