Title of the paper :
Journey towards Self-Realisation in Anita Nair’s Ladies Coupe -A Psychoanalytical Study
Abstract:
Literature and Psychology are interrelated as Literature is the manifestation of the psychological assumptions of its creators and literature is comprehended through the psychological assumptions of its interpreters. Psychological insights form an integral part of a fictional masterpiece to understand the human strengths and frailties and to explore the diverse aspects of personality. Psychoanalytic criticism applies some techniques of psychoanalysis in the interpretation and analysis of literary texts. Psychoanalytic criticism differs in its perspective when compared to psychological criticism, as the latter is the kind of biographical criticism as it analyses literature in terms of the mental processes of the author and examines the text considering the author’s motivation and intentions’ effect on the readers. In contrary, Psychoanalytic criticism advocates a theoretical framework for the analysis of literature with due emphasis on psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic theory is based upon specific theories initiated by the Austrian, Sigmund Freud who remains a dominant cultural force till date. Freud was an avid student of literature, and his love of literature is mirrored in the modern discourse of psychoanalysis.
