A Subaltern Study: Representation of ‘Lumpenproletariat’ in the Select Tamil Movie
Abstract:
The research paper discusses the representation of lumpenproletariat in Tamil movies contextualizing in the subaltern study. Globally, the cinema industry has progressed enormously in the usage of technology and social representation. As a part of social reformation, the expression and resistance of gender and caste issues have been exemplified from time to time through different social mediums. Tamil Cine industry being one of the internationally recognized and economically progressed industries have brought many socio-political issues to attention through mainstream movies. The first part of the paper discusses the subaltern representation in the contemporary digital world and the Lumpenproletariat as part of the subaltern study. Lumpenproletariat is a Marxist term referring to the people from the low order of society who are not interested in revolutionary advancements. This discussion leads to the central part of the research analysis, the nature of representation through the expression and resistance of the lumpenproletariat in the selected movie. The research is a qualitative study analysing the content of the select movie. The selected movie for the study is Mandela2021 a comedy political satire directed by Madonne Ashwini casting Yogi Babu as the protagonist who is from a marginalized sector of people. The paper concludes, Lumpenproletariat from a subaltern study is a blindspot of society and also rationalizes the implication of representation in the extensive advancement of a country.
