Equipping Undergraduate Slow Learners with Communicative Competency through English-language Training Program
Abstract:
Today’s learners lack basic knowledge in English language and it was aggravated by lockdown on the youth with home-grown deviations and distractions, for lack of rigorous academic student formation. Yet, the workplaces demand standard communication skills to collaborate with and guide the various chores in the society. Hence, as a corrective measures, a Communicative competency-building project consisting of 30-hours-six-days intensive English program for five weak students from each six academic departments were conducted with methodology such as cooperative group learning, play-way and assessments practices along with multi-media rich resources, resulted in upward skills among students. They acquired confidence in group and inter-personal communication in short duration. This initiative program brought-in quicker effect among students in terms of vocabulary-skills, positive communicative behaviours, improved soft skills for socialisation, critical thinking, cooperative behaviours, active listening capacity. It was evident through interactive talk sessions held. Students were able to positively correct or cope-with communication impediments such stage-fear, poor confidence, low word skills and individualism drastically in a short span of time.
