Title of the paper : Problematising Intercultural Transposition in Literary Translation

Abstract: Translation of literary works is a creative act and the translator’s job is a serious one since she has to re-write an aesthetic product to a new readership. The source text is from a different space and time and requires to be transplanted in another space and time transporting the textual properties at the level of content and form. However, establishing equivalence between both the texts belonging to two distinct languages and cultures or bringing in adequacy in the new text is a very challenging task. This happens primarily because both the source text and the target text make signification within the purview of the respective cultures and outside the culture the linguistic units do not make sense. Many a times the translator has to be satisfied with a rough proximity because total equivalence is not possible. A literary translation is directed by a set of extra-linguistic criteria like ideology, patronage, purpose of the work, type of readership, status of the source language and the target language. All this makes the translation a vulnerable and high risked enterprise. This paper intends to see how a literary translation is governed by the different aforesaid factors. It will look into how culture, rather than language, is a more important force in literary translation. It will try to examine how cultural difference plays a big role for intercultural transposition in translation of literature.
