Fables to Digitalisation with Special Focus on C. S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia
Abstract:
Children’s literature has its humble beginnings in the oral tradition which involved the transmission of stories, tales and poems from generation to generation. These stories and poems served the dual purpose of entertaining the young ones as well as teaching moral values to them. Even after books took over the task of transmitting these tales and poems from the bards, there were no books that were specifically designed for children. Instead, folk tales and stories were read by adults and then were passed on to the children as bed time stories. The Panchatantra stories formed part of the folk tales from India which were written in the early 200 AD. In Britain, Chapbooks and Horn books were being published with stories meant for children during the 17th century. A separate genre for children began to appear only after the 18th century. John Newbery wrote and published A Little Pretty Pocket Book, a remarkable first-ever book for children in 1744. This book was incorporated with various novel features like rhymes, pictures, games, puzzles and stories to captivate the children. Newbery was the leading publisher of Children’s literature during his period and has also published works by other authors, namely Samuel Johnson and Oliver Goldsmith Macmilan, 2009.
