Persian and the British Raj in India
Abstract:
While looking at the surface of language and literature, one might tend to look at the world as one entity made up of several parts. But it is not a uniform one. The cross-cultural exchange and circulation of people, philosophy, literatures and theory are inevitable though often not recognized as multinational. Persian language was the court language during Mughal era in medieval India. The relationship between India and Persia has been well-founded since immemorial. Persian language was produced one of the richest literary traditional at the beginning of 13th century under Ghurid Dynasty till the 20th century under British colonial period in India. The article is to highlights the causes and reasons behinds its decline by Britishers, as they gained ascendancy and slowly supplant the established court patronage system of India. As India is celebrating ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal’, it is high time to take an initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive and Independent India along with its Persian roots. It is high time to glorify Persian as it was prestigious being a language of elitist culture, language, literature, bureaucratic interaction and learning in India.
