Title of the paper : A Freudian Reading of the Select Characters in Shashi Deshpandes In the Country of Deceit

Abstract: The love story between Ashok Chinappa and Devayani Mudhol is portrayed in Shashi Deshpandes novel In the Country of Deceit. Even though Ashok is married, he develops feelings for Devayani, a spinster. He conveys his love feelings to Devayani. When both love each other ardently, his transfer separates them and they accept the situation and move on with their lives. This tale is the result of psychological conflict taking place in Ashok Chinappa and Devayani Mudhol. It is all about the motivations for their actions and the consequences of their actions. It is actually conflict between their ‘id’ and ‘Super ego.’ It also highlights how ‘ego’ uses ‘ego defense mechanisms’ to get away from anxiety. This research paper titled “A Freudian Reading of the Select Characters in Shashi Deshpande’s In the Country of Deceit” uses Freud’s concepts of Id, Ego, Superego and defense mechanisms as the theoretical framework for this research article. This Freudian approach to this novel enables to find out that the characters are caught in the conflict between their ‘id’ and ‘ego’ and they use ‘ego defense mechanisms’ to come out of the anxiety which results from the conflict.
