Title of the paper :
Internal Conflict and Metamorphosis of Mukundan in Anita Nairs The Better Man
Abstract:
In this hostile modern era, failure of interconnectedness leads to an imminent sense of isolation today. Isolation creates a mental vacuum which instigates depression, anxiety, aggression, and addiction resulting in internal conflict and hampers the harmonious life of the individual and others in society. Internal relationships between thought, beliefs, and intentions are inextricably intertwined with external relationships. Literature and psychology have a strong correlation as they both deal with the psyche of the human being and relationships. Internal conflict is the conflict which an individual, experiences within the self in an imbalanced or confused state of mind entangled with multiple perspectives or inclinations. To resolve these conflicts, it is essential for an individual to come to a consensus with inner thoughts and the reality. Anita Nair, the renowned Indian novelist, dives a greater depth into the human psyche and successfully brings out the urges, complexities, anxieties, hopes ,and frustrations of her characters in the novels. This paper analyses the inner conflicts of the protagonist Mukundan in Anita Nair’s The Better Man and his journey towards self-actualisation.
