Title of the paper :
Oppression and Regression Imposed on the Life of Women in Alice Walker’s the Third Life of Grange Copeland
Abstract:
Social oppression have played a havoc in the life of people killing their ambitions and dreams and dashing them to the ground. Alice Walker talks about the social discrimination which follows generation after generation suppression. This formally undermines the talents and the credentials of the women in the family. The abuse of women begins by their own fathers and husbands in the black community. Walker displays her character in the novel from the internal perspective. In a male dominated world, women are expected to be submissive listen to everything the male has to say first to the father, then to the brother and then to her husband finally to her son. Although women have many external reasons to be suppressed they have it within the walls of the family. The highlight of this story is that Grange turns over a new leaf, understanding the plight of women and the need to reciprocate the love and affection received from them. Responding to the situation in a positive frame of mind with a repentance in heart throws a light of hope, a gleam of sun rise to the downtrodden and crushed heart and spirit. The role of parents in knitting the family bond right from the young tender age provides a foundation in the growth of one’s life. The way the family values are trained and imbibed in a child’s heart leads a long way. As King Solomon portrays, Train up a child in the way he should go even when he is old he will not depart from it. The turnover of Grange make him a responsible grandfather, repenting for the mistakes that were committed by him when he had the money, power and authority. The research paper examines the areas that has to be mended in pulling down the walls that lead to suppression and oppression in the society.
