Water and Ecosystem: Role of Wetlands in Water Conservation and Significance
Abstract:
Ecosystem are the cradle of life and are an inexhaustible source of biodiversity. They represent the living community of plants and animals in a given area interacting with themselves and with the non-living components of the environment such as weather, earth, climate, soil, air and water. Wetlands are some of the most valuable ecosystems on earth. They are composed of abiotic and biotic components and acts naturally as a reservoir of food, shelter and habitat for biological communities. It protects the land from flood, erosion and soil degradation. Water of wetlands are used for irrigation and drinking purpose. Wetlands are the kidneys of the waterways, aquatic plants help to filter water as it moves through the system, slowing flows and performing an important nutrient cycling lancet. Wetlands cover at least six percent of the Earth and have become a focal issue for conservation due to the ecosystem services they provide. The Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society SWCS is a non-governmental organization responsible for management of 24 hectares Kota Kinabalu Wetlands a mangrove swamp conservation located 2km north-east of Kota Kinabalu city in Lika’s. This paper reviews the role of wetland in water conservation and its significance on the basis of J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Lord of The Rings.” through the representation of the Dead Marshes in the Two Towers, the second volume of the Lord of the rings trilogy, in a chapter called The Passage of the Mashes.
