Title of the paper :
Padminis Quest for identity and completion in Girish Karnads Hayavadana
Abstract:
Girish Karnad one of the best Indian postmodern English playwrights, in his play Hayavadana, examines Mans quest for himself inside a web of intricate relationships. He is a prime example of creations incompleteness on the human, animal, and heavenly realms. The struggle between the body and the soul is depicted in the play. The major conflict of the play is a love triangle between two best friends, Devedatta and Kapila, and Padmini, a woman who is attracted to both men for different reasons. The background story concerns Hayavadana, a man with a horses head who is looking for a human form to give his existence meaning. Karnad, often focuses on folk culture and draws influence from myth and folklore. And he has returned us to the tales and traditions of the Hindu religion with Hayavadana. The current paper examines how Padmini experiences an identity crisis and a sense of incompleteness. She desires Devadattas intellect and Kapilas physicality. She aspires to the finest of everything.
