Title of the paper :
Sea is at the Crux of the Matter! – A Study of J. M. Synges Riders to the Sea with Special Reference to the Contemporary Scenario in Keralas Southern Coastal Line
Abstract:
Sea has remained the focal point of human existence since time immemorial. Life centers on the sea in coastal communities. J. M. Synge’s Riders to the Sea offers a bird’s eye view of life in Aran Island, an island off the West of Ireland. It also details the myriad emotions of the characters with relation to the sea. Though the sea is brimming with life, at times it takes on the role of the destroyer of lives. The paper explores the multi-faceted role of the sea as portrayed in Synge’s play. It also draws parallel to the conservation efforts made by the fishing community in the southern coastal line of Kerala. The turmoil which has erupted following the construction of a sea port is at the crux of the matter here. Modernity often clashes with elements of Nature. The emotional turmoil dominant in the fishing communities in Ireland and Kerala, with respect to sea, are delved into in the paper.
