Title of the paper :
Disillusionment as a Site of Negotiation in Harper Lees Go Set a Watchman
Abstract:
The journey to find self as a young woman is fraught with not just an ideology but the cold hard truth of human frailty and limitations. Set in a racially charged American South, the symbolic woman of conscience Jean Louise is faced with the shattering choice between her principles against racism and her lifelong moral compass, her father. Lee’s text is a revealing testament to the ambiguity of moral wrongness and rightness as displayed through the life of the female protagonist. The juxtaposition of Jean Louise’s upbringing in Lee’s magnum opus To Kill A Mockingbird and the select text shows humbling truths about human realities such as the relational and conditional interconnectedness of human societies, identity assertion as a woman, and the issue of negotiating with ‘self’. The paper will study the search for individuality by the female protagonist as a woman placed in a historically discriminating community and the issue of negotiation and the constant struggle between moral principles and the predicament of human frailty.
