Abstract:
Womens fiction embraces themes that revolve around women their home, family, and society. Women are considered as a preserver of culture. As Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a woman novelist, she has successfully projected the desires and dreams of women. She projects problems of women in the immigrant land. Her women characters are multidimensional characters. They have their own strength, weakness and inner conflicts. In her novels the author has recorded the sacrifices of women for their family, society and culture. In her novels, her women characters struggle to create a women friendly environment. The characters in her novels emerge from the private space into the public figure. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has fantastically portrayed the unwanted social stigmas and expectation thrust upon women in the Indian society. She has sketched her female characters as strugglers who go against the unwanted social customs. This study aims at how the women characters are treated in the novel The Mistress of Spices and Before We Visit the Goddess written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.
