Title of the paper :
Romanticizing Rain in Reel Worlds: An Analysis of P. Padmarajans Thoovanathumbikal
Abstract:
Rain is one among the most popular and critically acclaimed metaphors in Malayalam cinema as its representation has both optimistic and pessimistic connotations. Monsoon evokes a multitude of moods in every Malayali, like romance, melancholy, happiness and nostalgia. P. Padmarajan made an attempt to romanticize the rainy weather scenes through his famous movie, Thoovanathumbikal where rain almost appears as a character in the movie. In the movie, romantic episodes of Jayakrishnanhero and Clarasecond-heroine are shown, accompanied by rain. Rain makes these scenes soothing and memorable. It is a symbol of their love, passion and nature’s blessing to their union. The title of the movie itself holds a deep meaning connected to rain. The word, thoovana means water droplets and thumbikal means dragon flies. The meaning of the title metaphorically stands for the romantic love story happened during rainy season. This paper entitled, ‘Romanticizing Rain in Reel Worlds An Analysis of P. Padmarajan’s Thoovanathumbikal explores how rain acts as a visual storyteller in a romantic Malayalam classic movie.
