Title of the paper :
The Theme of Womanhood in the Select Poems of Sylvia Plath
Abstract:
The Cambridge Dictionary defines womanhood as the state of being a woman, or the period of time when someone is a woman. The American poet Sylvia Plath used womanhood as a theme in her poetry. The major themes of Sylvia Plath’s poems are Death, Patriarchy, Motherhood, Nature etc. She also discusses womanhood and its significance in her poems. Her poems depict womanhood and its different stages from multiple angles. Her poems explore the whole range of female experiences in a patriarchal society. This study examines the theme of womanhood in the select poems of Sylvia Plath. The selected poems are Daddy, Lady Lazarus, Morning Song, Widow, Mushrooms, Barren Women and Edge. Plath’s poems express her protest against the unequal power relations between men and women within the society.
