Water, Water Everywhere!
Abstract:
As S. T. Coleridge says in his poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner “water, water, everywhere but not a drop to drink”, water is everywhere in literature and many literary works can be taken as an example to have written based on water. Water plays a vital role in human life. Around 80 percent of the human body is made up of water and around 71 percent of earth is made of water. Earth is the only habitable planet found so far and the reason for the earth being so is due to the presence of water. There are five elements of nature that would make the physical body namely fire, earth, water, air and space. Millions are spent to find the presence of water in other planets in our solar system. This shows the importance of water to the human beings’ existence on this planet and this also fetches a major part to the water in the field of literature too. Water is available to us in the form of rain, lakes, rivers, seas, oceans, ponds, falls and brooks. Various literary texts and movies reflect the significance and the relations of water to the human life and various literary works use water as symbols to denote vital qualities. This research paper makes an attempt to bring out the various dimensions that how water is used across various literary works.
