Quest for Identity in Divakarunis The Palace of Illusions
Abstract:
While analysing Indian mythology and epics, Draupadi, also known as Panchali can be recognized as one of the major female characters. From her fierce birth from fire till the end of her life, Panchali had many factors that differentiated her from other women. But even in these differences just because of being born as a woman, she had to face marginalization, identity crisis, violence and injustice from the male dominant society. The novel The Palace of Illusions by Chithra Banerjee Divakaruni is a retelling of famous Indian epic Mahabharat from the perspective of Panchali. The aim of this research paper is to analyze the quest for identity in Panchali and her constant struggles to achieve it. The research methodology that had been used for writing this research paper is Close reading and Internet Browsing.
