Abstract: The paper Exploitation in Friendship in Oscar Wildes Short Story The Devoted Friend attempts to expose manipulative nature of a person who exploits his own friend. This paper portrays the lives of two friends among them one is true to his friend and the other is using his witty words to manipulate the thought of the other. Hans, the protagonist of the short story is exploited by his friend, Miller. This paper focuses on the innocence of Hans and how he is exploited by Miller through his manipulating words. The scholar also aims to make the readers know about the limitations of being manipulated by others. This paper also portrays Hans as an innocent friend who sacrifies his life for his so called true friend. The scholar tries to make the readers aware of the nature of manipulators. The scholar also gives some ways to the readers to overcome from being manipulated. The scholar refers to the Information Manipulation Theory to make the readers aware of the negative effects of manipulation. The incidents that happens in the life of Hans makes the readers to know about the influence of being manipulated. This paper also focuses to make the readers to be aware of friend abuse implications and their perceived protection from exploitation.
