Abstract:
The Paper entitled The contrast between working class and Elite society in The Elephant by Aravind Adiga. Indian society characterized as a pluralistic society because it possesses complex social order. It suffers from multitude of ethnic, linguistic, religious, caste, and class division. This paper is an attempt to highlight social class difference portrayal in Adigas short story The Elephant. Aravind Adiga focusses his attention on the sufferings, misery, and dejection of the impoverished as a result of the downtrodden Indian society. This short storys title reveals the hard labour of the man is compared to the elephant which carries less load. The working class are those minimally educated people who engage in manual labour with little or no prestige. Unskilled workers in this class are underpaid and have no opportunity for career advancement. Working class people works for his master and gets nothing more than a little amount of food time-to-time. If they get more money, they will spend it for buying liquor. They have built their own jail. Education, economic security and job opportunity will reduce the suffering of working-class people. The objective of this paper is to draw the struggle of working-class people and deprived section of our society and also solicit some solutions.
