Self Identity Self Identity In George Bernard Shaws Play Pygmalion
Abstract:
The play Pygmalion analyzes how Social and Self identity is formed not only through patterns of speech but also through ones Physical Appearance. Here the author George Bernard Shaw draws his views through the character named Eliza Doolittle. The author simply says that the status of the different people can be just identified through their attire. The importance of appearance in the play reveals that the identity changes often, but it cannot be natural as it was just put up on like a costume. Eliza is the best example of this, after changing her Appearance and Accent she fools people as if she is from a noble background. But by the end of the play, it is unclear whether she had really changed her nature and identity or she just wanted to pretend like high class people. The play raises many questions about the stability of identity, whether Eliza had really changed or she cannot escape her true identity? But however one can change their appearance or accent and pretend that they had changed their identity, but one cannot change really ever….
