Title of the paper : Estrangement and Assimilation in Bharati Mukherjees The Tigers Daughter

Abstract: The term Diaspora is considered to be crucial in the present context of post colonial discourse. The dual role of the immigrant is a matter of great concern in Diasporoic literature. Diasporic literature also serves as a resource for academic research and has led to the understanding of the two cultures involved. Bharati Mukherjee is a notable writer of diaspora. Her literary career spans for about four decades establishing her as an incomparable writer of diaspora. She skillfully showcases the struggles of the immigrant women. Her characters go through a lot of traumatic experiences but they do not give up. She portrays her women characters as strong women who come out of their problems through their own effort. The present paper proposes to analyse the alienated and assimilated status of Tara Banerjee Cartwright, the protagonist of Mukherjees, ‘The Tigers Daughter. The protagonist goes through a series of incidents that lead to the transformation of her mind and towards the end she attains self - realization.
