Title of the paper :
The problems of Cultural and Religious identity in J.M. Synges Plays
Abstract:
Though Synge was a member of Irish group of Dramatist associated with Irish Literary Renaissance, his contribution to the Irish Drama and Culture is quite distinctive. He was, of course, a follower of W.B. Yeats in the cause of revival of Irish culture and its old glory. However, he was equally aware of the shortcomings of Irish characters and political Problems. He wrote in Anglo- Irish language but not entirely in the old Gaelic language. He thus forged a new dramatic language which was at once poetic, evocative and dramatic. In his six plays written during a short life he dwelt with the marginalized, peasants, vagabonds and tinkers, impoverished couples and young men and women, forced to live a life of monotony and loneliness but occasionally daring to move out for earning their livelihood. His attitude to marginalized people and their cultural and religious beliefs is full of sympathy and understanding.
