A Study of Discrimination and Identity Crisis in Arundhati Roys Ministry of Utmost Happiness
Abstract:
The interplay of discrimination and Identity crisis are themes explored by various authors at different points of time in world of Literature. Arundhuti Roy is an Indian novelist, activist and world citizen whose novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is beautiful narrative set in Delhi, dealing with trans- gender discrimination, dalit discrimination and female discrimination prevailing at different levels and the predicament of people suffering from identity crisis. The novel has been written keeping socio political facts in mind. The plot of the novel presents various violent incidents like Godhra train attack, Kashmir unrest, trans-gender dilemma, predicament of a female in male dominating society and Ahmedabad riots. Ministry of Utmost Happiness is a masterpiece in illustrating pain and torment of Anjum, S. Tilottama, Saddam and other characters in novel. Present paper explores how discrimination generates the issue of identity crisis.
