Mulk Raj Anands Untouchable: A Tale of Distress and Disgrace
Abstract:
Dalit literature, a true voice of Dalits rights, equality and freedom, has become one of Indias most illustrious literary representations of Postcolonial writings. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi are the core driving forces behind Dalit writings their ideas serve as an inspiration for the authors creation of Dalit literature. Mulk Raj Anand has carved out a distinctive niche for himself as a social and a humanist writer in English, in India. He has made a significant contribution to the growth of Indian English literature and focuses on the caste system, economic hardship and disgrace that are ingrained in Indian society. His characters reflect the social reality of Indias oppressed people, for he was compassionate and empathetic towards the deprived classes. Untouchable 1935, his debutant work, influenced by Gandhian philosophy chronicles a day in the life of its untouchable sweeper protagonist Bakha. The writer has almost meticulously crafted a historical raconteurs account of the untouchables miserable living conditions, their insurmountable hardships and their physical and emotional suffering. The present paper will explore the elements responsible for the caste differentiation and will also focuses on the destitution endured by the natives belonging to the so called lower strata of the society.
