Title of the paper :
Exploring the Sensational Image of Women in Shobha Des The Second Thought
Abstract:
Shobha De is an acclaimed modern novelist and journalist in Indian English literature. She has been one of the vanguards in the domain of the Indian urban women community. Her literature unveils the long-standing patriarchal Indian society that has oppressed and subjugated women at the psychological, emotional, sexual, political, social, economic, and cultural levels. She has pioneered the powerful projection of a new era of women by reinventing the image and perspectives of womens autonomy and emancipation. The paper attempts to explore the writers provocative views on Indias patriarchal system that has blocked womens progress and restricted their access to opportunities. It attempts to examine her novel Second Thought which represents the distress of Maya- a voiceless victim, confined in the claws of the shallowness of her marriage, neglected, belittled by her husband, and betrayed by her lover. This paper explores the dilemma and image of contemporary women woven into the psychological and communal intricacies of the male-dominated society. It represents the metamorphosis of women from submissive to audacious rebels who probe their desires and freedom by consorting with an extramarital affair, in a way to demurral the machismo attitude persisting in the society.
