Abstract:
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni occupies an exemplary position among leading women writers of diaspora. Her writings lay emphasis on Indian migration, socio-economic and cultural experiences. Before We Visit the Goddess is one of the novels which illustrate her great and genuine concern for empowerment of women. With reference to the above mentioned novel this paper throws light on Divakarunis efforts to prove the latent abilities of women inspite of all the subjugations and frontiers around them. As a staunch fighter against varied oppressions she has created memorable characters like Sabitri who will inspire generations to come. Through her writings she upholds the dignity of women and in this novel she portrays three strong women belonging to different generations striving for identity, acceptance and recognition in male chauvinistic society.
