Title of the paper :
Rifling for Love, Independence and its Reflection in Kate Chopins The Awakening: A comparative perspective with the famous Tamil movie Vidhi
Abstract:
The Awakening explores one womans desire to live fully within her true self. Her devotion to that purpose causes conflicts with her friends, family, and the dominant values of her time. Its the story of Edna Pontellier, who tries to get pleasure outside the world, instead of her cultural roles of wife and mother, and fulfillment of her sexual desire and independence. Like this novel, the Tamil movie Vidhi was released on 18th Jan 1984, directed by K. Vijayan starring Poornima Bhakyaraj, Mohan, and Sujatha in prominent roles. In this movie Vidhi, Mohans character is portrayed as a playboy who has never understood the concept of love. Mohan belongs to a rich family. His father is a famous lawyer and his mother is a housewife. Mohan happily and consciously without the intention of true love, flirts Poornima Bhakyaraj and after a lot of struggle he wins her love. My research article deals with the novel The Awakening and the movie Vidhi focusing on the rifling search for love and pleasure without considering the cultural roles and society through the characters of Edna Pontellier and Mohan. It is like a comparative study between the novel and the movie as they have some similarities. Edna Pontellier did not have love her husband as she got married in her teenage. For instance, in the movie, Vidhi, like Edna Pontellier, the hero Raja Mohan did not have any true idea of love and tries to flirt the heroine.
