Title of the paper :
Socio-cultural Diversity in Indian Transgender Narratives
Abstract:
The patriarchal society defines and makes rules, customs, norms and traditions for everybody to take control over. Likewise it has made all unwritten rules for transgender people by not considering their emotions and human rights. India has had a rich cultural epoch for transgender people and the historical references are evidences, but the condition of present transgender lives is indeed the worst. In the global era, where people are focusing on development sector transgender people are still seeking place for their identity because they are doubly exiled from family as well as from society. India is recognised for its Unity in Diversity, for sharing a lot of diverse culture within the states. The present paper endeavours to decipher these differences taking up one narrative from Tamil Nadu South India The Truth About Me A Hijra Life Story and the other Myself Mona Ahmed from Old Delhi North India. These two works share the culture of the place as hijras or eunuchs. For a hijra it is very challenging to come out of cocoons to spread their wings of freedom of expression in this society. It is undeniable that they also have all the rights to lead their lives with dignity like others do. It is strange that, the treatment and identity of transgender people differ- based on their community, caste, religion, family background and the education received by them- which will be studied in detail in the present paper.
