KurOukhar gahi Ruidas ti bonMgonaU: The Legend of the flee of KurOukhar from Ruidas
Abstract:
KurOukhar gahi Ruidas ti bonMgonaU meaning flee of KurOukhar from Ruidas. Kurkhar means kurukh speaking community, in the administrative circle the Kurkhars are referred to as Oraons. This adivasi community is distributed over a large tract of eastern India which extends from West Bengal to Maharashtra . Oraons have different names in the different parts of the country such as in Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand they are called as Uraon or Dhangar while in Bengal and Odisha they are known as Kora and Kisan meanimg digger and cultivator respectively. According to 2011 census the total Oraon population in India is 3,776,688. They speak kurukh language which has a Dravidian affinity and their script is Tolong Siki. Every human society has its own set of myths, legends and tales preserved in the form of folklores. A legend can be understood as an account, tale or a story handed down from one generation to another as tradition and it is popularly accepted as historical in nature. The legends and myths might seem similar but the difference lies in the time frame, the time frame of legends is the ordinary time frame of human experience. The legend provides valuable account which aids in understanding their world view. Thus within this purview an attempt is being made to present the legend of the kurkhars regarding their flee from Ruidas.
