Title of the paper :
Yesterday Was a Really Bad Day for Him: An Intersectional Case Study Analysis of the 2021 Atlanta Spa Shootings
Abstract:
In 2021, Robert Aaron Long, a white man from Georgia, was charged with the killing of eight people which included six Asian American women. Long claimed that he had a sex addiction which motivated him to take out his frustration at the spa businesses. According to Long and the authorities in charge, the crimes were not racially motivated. The objective of my study is to carry out an intersectional analysis of the case to make visible the structures of white dominance that cause violent crimes and then shield perpetrators of said crimes. Intersectionality lies at the roots of contemporary cultural studies as it accounts for the multifaceted nature of subjects, institutions, processes and structures. In this case, racism and misogyny are deeply intertwined. These killings call for an investigation of the space Asian women occupy in Western male fantasies and how these fantasies have been shaped by Western cultural texts.
