Sewing Cultural Fissures with Memory: Mahasweta Devis Mother of 1084
Abstract:
Mahasweta Devi is one of the prolific and socially committed Indian writers. She claims for the rights of the tribal people and other marginalized communities through her writings. Mahasweta Devis novel Mother of 1084 is the narrative of a bereaved mother who had lost her son, Brati, in the then powerful movement of Bengal, the Naxalite movement of the 1970s. Mahasweta Devi uncoils the plot through the constructive recurrent memories of Sujata, the protagonist and the flash back episodes narrated by other characters. She employs memory to bridge in the cultural fissures thats caused by multiple social, cultural and historical factors. This article attempts to deconstruct the role of memory which serves as a pivot in the artistic construction of the novel.
