Cultural Impact on Women: A Feministic Study of Virginia Woolfs The New Dress
Abstract:
Culture is a marvellous miracle which binds people together from all over the world. Each country has a distinct culture which highlights the customs and traditions followed in that specific nation. People around the globe gets fascinated by unique cultures of various nations. Men and women all over the world are anticipated to follow certain norms to lead a dignified and peaceful life under their culture. When an individual discards these norms, heshe is not accepted by hisher people and country. Women struggle a lot than men under the cultural structure. They are forced to maintain a perfect etiquette to be accepted as an individual in the society, which follows a standard culture. Virginia Woolf is a celebrated English writer, whose works mostly sheds light on the plight of women. Her magnificent short story The New Dress is taken from the collection A Haunted House and Other Short Stories. This short story is also published in the collection Mrs. Dalloways Party. This extraordinary short story gives a clear-cut picture on the mental trauma faced by women in a high-class society. This paper aims to bring out the effects of culture on women, which highly questions a woman’s identity in the cultural-bound world through the short story The New Dress by Virginia Woolf.
