Title of the paper :
Life, Literature, and Landscape: Spatializing Tamil Sangam Age and Tamil Sangam Culture
Abstract:
Life, literature, and landscape share interlinked relationships incidentally and evidently. It is interesting to note how literature and landscape telltale the stories of people, their traditions, their history, and so on. Revisiting it is the need of the hour. Landscapes serve as a cultural space inherently. Literature becomes a medium to document the same. Space in cultural studies is physical, symbolic, political, metaphorical, identity, and sentimental. For Pramod K. Nayar, Space informs lifestyle because the geography of your home and office is often determined and determines your class and social status. Where you live determines how you live. In accordance, in this paper, I will try to decipher how Sangam Cankam, classical literature and Sangam landscape in Tamil literature form a cultural space. Sangam landscape’s classification is based on the topography of the region, such as Kurinji Mountain region, Mullai Forest region, Marudham farm region, Neithal sea –coast region, and Paalai desert region. These places act as a cultural space to the then era. Sangam poetry using Sangam landscape tells the history of the regions, their people, their occupation, their relationships, their religion and rituals, their food habits, their musical instruments, and so on. Doreen Massey says social is located in space. So as in Sangam poetry where place creates the space and in turn space constructs the social.
