Title of the paper :
Food as an Expression of Identity and Culture in Elif Shafaks The Bastard of Istanbul
Abstract:
The paper attempts to analyse the inter relationship between food and culture in the novel The Bastard of Istanbul. Food is an integral part of human lives. Food reflects the culture of an ethnic group. The food that one consumes and one cooks also gives identity to a person. Individual choices of food also reveal the acceptance and rejection of cultural values. The best way to learn a countrys culture is through food, food etiquettes. In most cultures food plays an important role in the lives of the families. Majority of the family activities and activities revolve around cooking and eating habits. Each culture depending on the social occasion serves food. The novelist Elif Shafak makes use of lots of food and kitchenware to talk about Turkish culture. Thus, food becomes an integral part in culture of a nation.
