Village Life and Humour: A Pre-theoretical Seamless Amalgamation
Abstract:
Humour or hasya is a universal phenomenon. It is a natural emotion of life which lies in the heart of every human being. Different theorists have had different views on the concept of humour Aristotle maintained that witty humour is a virtue few consider it a vice, as in western culture, philosophers like Plato and Epictetus viewed humour as one. One thing that stays constant, however, is that it evokes laughter. In addition, Ben Jonson relates humour with four distinct bodily fluids where an imbalance in these causes a personality disturbance and humour is mentioned as one of the rasas by Bharat Muni. What, however, precedes the theoretical paradigms is the practice of incorporating humour as a part and parcel of life, the basic premise that evoked the philosophers and theoreticians to formally nomenclature and technically define it. The finest exemplification of humour is visible explicitly in the lives and talks of people in rural areas or villages. The Indian rural paradigm is no exception to it as villagers can invoke laughter in every small activity. The connect is simple their life is more social and physical activity based thereby making them find humour and happiness with each other in almost all social activities such as playing cards, farms, joint families, etc. The Research Paper analyses the invocation of humour in the routine life of villagers residing in the villages of Haryana. An attempt shall be made to evaluate the situations, ranging from cordial and pleasurable to offensive and mourning, and how each, irrespective of its apparent binary and polarized stature as compared to another, implicitly nurtures the seeds of humour in them. It shall also be ascertained as to what purpose they serve in the social fabric and how, several philosophers and theoreticians have built their edifices of knowledge upon them.
