Title of the paper :
Cultural Nuances: New Zealand and America in Janet Frames Living in the Maniototo
Abstract:
The literary history of New Zealand has been a very interesting area of research. The paper is an attempt to explore New Zealand literature through one of its women writers Janet Frame. This paper will focus on one of her significant novels, Living in the Maniototo 1979. The novel tells the story of a writer Mavis Halleton who has survived the death of two husbands and her attempt to get her life and writing career back on track. The novel traces Mavis life in New Zealand and America. She lives in New Zealand where she marries twice and then on invitation from one of her ex-husbands friends she moves to America. Her life experiences in both countries are very different. The laid-back country, small suburb life in New Zealand as opposed to American city life is a big adjustment the protagonist has to make. The paper will attempt to understand the cultural nuances seen in the novel Living in the Maniototo from a womans perspective.
